September 1, 2013

Vulture Awareness Day

A day filled with programs, activities and crafts designed to help vultures out with their image problem.  Meet the Aquarium’s resident vultures and find out how you can help them. You’ll experience close-up encounters with live vultures, make a craft vulture to take home and participate in interactive activities in Discovery Classroom, get a feel for vulture anatomy by touching wings, feet and other bio-facts, and enjoy other programs about vultures.

Native black vultures and turkey vultures are popular stars of Winging It: Birds in Flight. The 1:00 PM show featuring these birds and other native raptors and shorebirds is $4 in addition to admission. Other Vulture Awareness Day activities are free with admission or membership.Free with admission.

Behind the Scenes – Aquarium Close Encounters

2:00 – 3:30 PM  – The Aquarium is open! Visit labs and holding areas, and feed the animals in this thorough behind-the-scenes adventure that includes and overhead view of the Living Shipwreck. Age 6 and up, $15.

Enjoy programs free with admission throughout the day, or enjoy an outdoor adventure or indoor tour for additional fees.

SwanFest – Acoustic Highway

6:30 – 8:00 PM – Acoustic Highway.  Enjoy live music at Olde Town Square in downtown Swansboro.  Bring your lawn chair and enjoy great music by the sea!  Alcoholic beverages are prohibited. Pets allowed. Plenty of restaurants are within walking distance if you’d like to grab dinner before or after the concert.  Free!

Behind the Scenes – Otter Antics

1:00 – 2:00 PM  – The Aquarium is open for Labor Day! Go behind-the-scenes with the otter keepers, help prepare enrichment items and see how much fun it is to care for otters. Age 12 and up, $25.

EmeraldFest – Wild Honey

6:30 – 8:00 PM – Wild Honey. Enjoy live music and the tranquil ocean breeze. Bring chairs, blankets, even dinner! Access also features volleyball courts, picnic tables and restrooms. Alcoholic beverages prohibited. Western Ocean Regional Access (WORA), 9003 Louise Avenue in Emerald Isle. Free, sponsored by Emerald Isle Parks and Recreation. 252-354-6350.

September 4, 2013

Walking Club

9:00 AM – Come out and join fellow EI neighbors and friends in an attempt to create a healthier lifestyle. Each walk will begin and end at the Emerald Isle Community Center with different routes walked each week; most walks will be 2-3 miles. Rain location will be the Emerald Isle Community Center gymnasium. This program is open to participants of all ages. Anyone under 16 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian. There will also be Bonus Miles that can be earned each week; for example a family walk outside of the Walking Club can earn up to 5 points! At the end of the season, awards and gifts will be given to participants in many different categories. For more information, contact 252.354.6350.

Open Play Wii Bowling at the Emerald Isle Community Center

6:00 PM – 8:00 PM – Bowling is played on a Wii console. It’s fun, energetic, and free. Free and open to the public, children must be accompanied by an adult. Coffee is provided and bringing your own snacks is allowed. Call 252.354.6350 for more information.


September 6, 2013

Classic Movie Night at the Emerald Parks and Recreation Center

7:00 PM – Movies are family oriented, free and open to the public. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Parental Guidance may apply to some films. Popcorn and drink for $1.00. Please bring chairs and or blankets, no outside beverages or snacks. This month’s featured movie is “To Sir With Love”. Call 252.354.6350 for more information.

September 7 through 20, 2013

Airlie Gardens Concert Series

Relax under the broad branches of the Airlie Oak as the area’s premier musicians perform every first & third Friday in Wilmington, NC. Airlie Gardens Concert Series is a great place to kick back and enjoy a picnic, your favorite beverage, a comfy chair or blanket, and then just relax and let the syncopated rhythms take you away.
